ASQ has updated the Certified Quality Process Analyst (CQPA) Body of Knowledge for 2026. The revised BoK will be introduced in the August 2026 testing window. Most of the existing content remains relevant, but there are several important additions, one removal, and changes to the number of questions in each section.
CQPA exam question allocation
| CQPA BoK section | 2020 questions | 2026 questions | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| I. Quality Concepts and Team Dynamics | 20 | 22 | +2 |
| II. Quality Tools and Process Improvement Techniques | 26 | 29 | +3 |
| III. Data Analysis | 33 | 33 | 0 |
| IV. Customer-Supplier Relations | 13 | 10 | -3 |
| V. Corrective and Preventive Action | 8 | 6 | -2 |
| Total | 100 | 100 | 0 |
The biggest increase is in Quality Tools and Process Improvement Techniques, while Data Analysis remains the largest section with 33 questions.
New topics added in 2026
Five new subtopics have been added:
| BoK reference | New subtopic |
|---|---|
| I.B.2 | Leadership commitment |
| I.B.3 | Communicating quality |
| I.D.5 | Effective team meetings |
| II.D.3 | Project management approaches |
| II.D.4 | Change management |
These additions show greater emphasis on leadership, communication, teamwork, project execution, and sustaining change.
Other notable updates include:
- Remote teams added under types of teams
- Work breakdown structure added to project management tools
- Data Integrity renamed Data Quality and Integrity
- Supplier performance expanded to include supplier audits and SCARs
- ANOVA removed from the 2026 BoK
Higher cognitive levels
Three topics now require more application-based understanding:
| Topic | 2020 level | 2026 level |
|---|---|---|
| Cost of quality | Understand | Apply |
| Six Sigma | Understand | Apply |
| Product and process approval systems | Understand | Apply |
Candidates should expect more scenario-based questions in these areas.
What candidates should focus on
Candidates using older study materials do not need to start over. Most of the content is unchanged.
The best approach is to:
- Add the five new topics to your study plan.
- Remove ANOVA from your required preparation.
- Spend more time on Sections I and II.
- Continue giving Data Analysis the highest priority.
- Practice application-based questions in cost of quality, Six Sigma, and product approval.
Final takeaway
The 2026 CQPA BoK is an update, not a complete redesign.
The core exam remains focused on quality concepts, improvement tools, data analysis, supplier relationships, and corrective action. The main shift is toward stronger practical understanding of leadership, communication, teamwork, project management, and change management.
